Tips for Designing an Effective Website

The first thing in developing a web design is to know how readers tend to read websites. People tend to scan and not read a website when they first come to your site. When the viewer scans your webpage, they typically scan the page in the shape of an “F”. This means that people tend to read down the left side of the webpage, the backbone of the “F” and then they read left to right from the backbone. Therefore designing your webpage with this in mind will be helpful to retain the interest of your reader. If you are having a hard time deciding whether to build a flash website or html website, checkout our primer web page.

Know your customer's preferences

Another thing to know about a reader is that people don’t tend to look for the fastest most economical way to reach a certain destination on a website. People want instant gratification so they will click on the first thing that appears to be sending them in the right direction. So it is important that a designer knows this aspect of peoples behavior to first, attract and retain the view and second, guide them to where they want to go. It is very difficult to judge what a person would click on because one person is very different from another. You just have to best judge what most people in general would do.

Keeping the message short & simple

Once you have the person’s attention because you didn’t waste their time and captured their attention. You still have to provide effective writing. It is so difficult to capture ones attention, so don’t waste it with poor writing. Grammar mistakes can kill a person’s attention in a hurry. You’ll need to express yourself in the writing and provide good and useful information for your users to digest. If you can do this, chances are that they are going to purchase your goods from you and earn your business.

Testing for problems is very important

Lastly, you’ll want to continually test your website. Its great that you got your website up and running but if you don’t maintain your website, it can get old pretty quick. The internet is changing constantly and if you can’t keep up, you might get left behind. You’ll want to test also to check for broken links, missing pictures, missing content etc.. A badly maintained website can be just as bad as not keeping a readers attention or grammar. Having a poorly maintained website shows lack of preparation and will not help in garnering the trust of your consumer.
