Elements of Logo Design

In branding a company, the company in essence is more than just the name of the company.  Branding a company has to do with designing element into what the company want to portray to the public.  In looking out for what these elements are and putting them into work on a logo is the skill of a professional logo designer or design team.  Balancing these unique elements is what the art of branding is all about.

Elements:

There are several elements of logo design that go into branding a company.  Successful companies use these elements to create a long lasting logo that will identify a company for years to come.

One of the most important elements is that the logo should last the test of time.  A logo that is done right should last for the length of the company.  Granted the same logo may undergo updates but the heart of the logo will generally stay the same.  Frequently changing the logo will confuse your clientele and is definitely undesirable.

The logo must also be unique and set yourself apart from the competition or any other logo.  Similar to changing your logo constantly, this will also eventually confuse your customers if your logo is similar to another company.  They may do different things, but your customers mindset will be different and may not allow customers to remember what your logo represents.  The logo should also be appealing to the customer as well.  The logo should represent what the industry is about.  For instance you wouldn’t want to use pastel colors for a construction company.  Appealing to the customer is going to be key in driving customers to your company.

Lastly, the logo must send you the right message about the company.  Granted some logos may not even give you a clue of what your company does, it can still send the right message to customers.  The logo must in fact ultimately be legible as well.  If a customer can’t read a logo, it makes it difficult to know what the company name is and what it does.  You may end up targeting the wrong sector and ultimately the logo can be rendered ineffective.
