Create a Web 2.0 Website

What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is a new form of website design which places primary focus on creating user experience, interaction and participation. This new generation of web design is taking over the minds of many web designers around the nation, get on-board. One of the main concepts of web 2.0 is collaboration and sharing of information. As a user of a community, you are able to log into a website, and post a new idea or contribute a comment about an existing idea.

Social Networking Websites

We've all heard of the popular social networking websites out there such as www.wikipedia.org, www.Facebook.com, www.LinkedIn.com, answers.yahoo.com. There are many social networking sites out there targeted to many different groups or social demographics. As a website owner, or webmaster, it is important to remember that you too can implement some of the web 2.0 features into your own website. Some popular web 2.0 features are:

  • A Forum
  • A weblog, or blog writing
  • Product comments or products reviews.
  • Member accounts and member features
  • Corporate accounts with Twitter or Facebook

A primary purpose of Web 2.0 is to keep your customers, or web visitors coming back for more and helping to grow your base of web traffic. It is not really a new concept but instead, a focus on attracting repeat visitors to your website.

New news or Old news?

Web 2.0 is a great concept and something to keep in mind as many companies didn't focus on customers participating in their website or the creation of content for that site. However, web 2.0 isn't anything different or new for a web developer. It is simply adding some new features, or different features that may or may not already be there. So, we suggest that you take a look at your own company or oranization and decide if adding user interactivity to your website is the right thing to do.

Why are Facebook & Twitter so popular?

I have many friends who live for Facebook & Twitter. It has really become an addiction for many people, which is a great concept for a webmaster. There are many corporate accounts on both FB & Twitter, as corporations are trying to take advantage of the hype that surrounds these two websites. So what do people love about them?

These two are very different, but they both share one common idea, which is instantly sharing information about you, and what you are doing. With Facebook, you can quickly and easily post a comment that all of your friends can see, with Twitter the same. So, what people love is the ability to tell their freinds or colleagues what they are currently doing and comment about it. So, if I was to Twitter what I am currently doing i would simply write "I am creating the best webpage EVER", and thats it. Seven simple words to tell all of my friends and colleagues what I am currently doing and even tell them to check it out.

So, as an idea, maybe you can create a Facebook account and update it daily with sales information and great deals. If you can get all of your customers to sign up, wouldn't that be great? FREE advertising?
